The coastal walk in 2026

Large parts of the trail along the cliff edge are shut this year. Here is what is closed, what is still open, and why it changes nothing for a day tour from Dublin.

The Cliffs of Moher Coastal Walk runs along the edge from Liscannor in the south to Doolin in the north, with the visitor centre in the middle. In 2026, most of it is closed. The official update, dated 1 August 2026, closes the whole southern stretch and stops the northern one well short of the cliffs.

None of this touches the paths inside the Cliffs of Moher Experience, which is where every tour bus parks.

The quick answer

In 2026 the walk from Liscannor to the Cliffs of Moher Experience (6 km) is fully closed, and from Doolin you can only walk as far as Surfers Path, with no access to the cliffs from that side. The 3.5 km of paths inside the Experience, north to O'Brien's Tower and south to the viewing platform, stay open, so day tours are not affected.

Is the Cliffs of Moher coastal walk open in 2026?

Only in part. The Liscannor section is fully closed, and the Doolin section ends at Surfers Path.

The official coastal walk page (updated 1 August 2026) says the walk from Liscannor to the Cliffs of Moher Experience, 6 km or 3.73 miles, is "fully closed due to severe safety concerns". The northern section from Doolin is open only as far as Surfers Path, where walkers are told to turn back. There is no access to the Cliffs of Moher Experience from Doolin.

The official page gives severe safety concerns as the reason. Plan as if the full Doolin to Hag's Head hike is off this year.

What can you still walk at the Cliffs of Moher?

About 3.5 km of paths inside the Cliffs of Moher Experience, plus an 800-metre stretch north of O'Brien's Tower that reopened after resurfacing.

From the visitor centre one path climbs north to O'Brien's Tower and another runs south to a viewing platform. These are the paved routes behind the stone wall, and they are part of your admission (Cliffs of Moher). An 800-metre stretch north of O'Brien's Tower has reopened after resurfacing work in 2025.

Two hours is plenty for both directions at an easy pace. That is also the minimum the cliffs' own site suggests for a visit.

Do the closures affect day tours from Dublin?

No. Every tour on this site stops at the visitor centre and uses the open paths inside the Experience.

Tour coaches park at the Cliffs of Moher Experience, and the admission in each price covers the visitor centre and its paths. Nobody on a day tour walks in from Liscannor or Doolin, so the closures change nothing about your time at the cliffs. What does change the day is how long you get there.

Want the most time on the open paths? The Wild Rover coach tour, the Burren and Galway coach tour and the rail tour give you two hours.

Can you walk from Doolin to the Cliffs of Moher in 2026?

No. The trail from Doolin is open only to Surfers Path, and the official page says there is no access to the Experience from Doolin.

You can still walk out of Doolin along the northern section for the sea views. At Surfers Path, turn back. The official page also asks you not to walk on the road at Surfers Path, which it calls hazardous (coastal walk update).

Staying in Doolin without a car? Take a tour that stops at the visitor centre, or see the cliffs from below: the Aran Islands day from Galway sails under them when the sea allows.

What are the safety rules on the open paths?

Stay on the marked paths, never cross the walls or barriers, and check the wind warning before you go.

The cliffs' site is blunt: stay on designated paths and do not go beyond walls or barriers. It also follows Met Éireann's warnings (weather and when to visit). Under a Status Yellow warning, take extra care. Status Orange means it is too hazardous to visit and the site may close. Under Status Red, the site is closed and evacuated.

Check met.ie the evening before your tour, and read our Cliffs of Moher weather guide for fog and wind.
