The Cliffs of Moher with kids

The cliffs themselves are easy with children: paved paths and free entry for under-12s. The hard part is the day trip around them, so the age rules and the length of the day decide which tour works.

At the gate, children under 12 enter free with a parent. On a tour, admission is already included, and what matters is each tour's own age rules and child price, which vary a lot: one takes no children under 6, two take none aged 2 and under, and only some offer a child rate.

Then there is the length of the day. Every Dublin day trip runs 12 hours or more, and the rail tour about 15.

The quick answer

The rail tour has a child rate for ages 5 to 15 and an infant band for 0 to 4; under-16s must travel with a parent or guardian. Wild Rover and the Ennis and Limerick coach do not take children 2 and under and charge the same price from 3. The small-group van has a minimum age of 6 and no reduction. The Burren and Galway coach is not recommended for small children. Expect a 12 to 15-hour day.

Is the Cliffs of Moher good for kids?

Yes, for children who can manage a long day: the paved paths and visitor centre are easy, and under-12s enter free at the gate.

Admission covers 800 m of paved paths and viewing areas, the visitor centre with a virtual reality cliff-face experience, toilets and free binoculars. Keep children close in the wind and on the paths near the edge.

What do children pay on each tour?

Only some tours have a child rate: the rail tour (5 to 15), the Doolin and Burren day and the boat day (5 to 12); others charge the full price.

Is there a minimum age?

On some tours: the small-group van requires age 6, Wild Rover and the Ennis and Limerick coach take no children 2 and under, and the Burren and Galway coach is not recommended for small children.

The rail tour has an infant band for ages 0 to 4, but think hard about a 15-hour day starting at 6:40 AM with a toddler. The Burren and Galway coach says that if your child is used to long bus trips (up to 2 hours between stops and up to 13 hours in the day), book a seat for them and bring your own child seat.

Can kids handle the 15-hour rail tour?

Older children often do, and the train legs break up the day, but it is still a very long day.

Guests repeatedly describe it as long, and one guest wrote about a 16-hour day. Pack snacks for the trains (meals are at your own expense), a book or tablet, and a warm layer, and book a ride home from Heuston in advance: one guest found no taxis waiting late at night. Do kids go free at the Cliffs of Moher?

Yes, at the gate: children under 12 enter free with a parent or guardian, up to four per adult, and a family ticket is €30.

School groups are excluded from the free offer. On a tour you do not need a ticket at all; see Cliffs of Moher tickets for the gate prices if you travel independently.

How do you keep children safe at the cliffs?

Stay on the paved paths, hold hands in the wind, and check the wind warning: in an Orange warning the site is considered too hazardous to visit.

The wind is usually much stronger at the cliffs than the forecast suggests. Dress children in waterproofs and a hat, and read Cliffs of Moher weather for what the warnings mean.

Can you bring a stroller?

On most coach tours, yes: the Wild Rover, Ennis and Limerick, small-group, Burren and Galway and boat listings say they are stroller accessible.

The Ennis and Limerick listing recommends a sturdy stroller because some stops have uneven natural surfaces. Railtours Ireland's tour page and FAQ do not mention strollers; email the operator before you book, and remember the train, coach and walking legs.

Is there a shorter option for families?

Yes: stay a night in Galway and take the 10-hour Galway day, or split the trip with the 3-day rail tour.

The Galway day starts at 9 AM, not 7, and returns at 7 PM, with two hours on Inisheer and an hour on top of the cliffs. It has a child band for 5 to 12, and infants sit on laps. The 3-day rail tour uses the same age bands as the day rail tour.
